Explanation of the hadith

Allah, the Exalted, lifted hardship from the Muslim nation and made its religious duties easy, and this hadith illustrates part of that ease in the Shariah. In it, Abu Razin came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) asking about his father and said: “O Messenger of Allah, my father is an old man who cannot bear Hajj, Umrah, or travel” — travel here meaning journeying, i.e. he is too frail to walk or ride due to his old age. The Prophet (peace be upon him) told him: “Perform Hajj on behalf of your father, and perform Umrah,” meaning: since he is old and weak and will remain so until death, you may perform Hajj and Umrah on his behalf. This hadith is used as evidence for the legitimacy of performing Umrah on behalf of one who is incapable.
