Hajj on behalf of the frail elderly

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said: A woman from Khath'am came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, “O Messenger of Allah, Allah's obligation of Hajj upon His servants has fallen due while my father is a very old man who cannot sit firm upon a mount — may I perform Hajj on his behalf?” He said, “Yes.” That was during the Farewell Pilgrimage.

Narrator: Abdullah ibn AbbasAgreed upon (Sahih)Reported by al-Bukhari (1513) and Muslim (1334).

Hajj and Umrah on behalf of the incapable

Abu Razin al-'Uqayli (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “O Messenger of Allah, my father is a very old man who can bear neither Hajj nor Umrah nor the journey.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “Perform Hajj on behalf of your father, and perform Umrah.”

Narrator: Abu Razin al-'UqayliAuthentic — graded Sahih by al-AlbaniReported by Abu Dawud (1810), al-Tirmidhi (930), and al-Nasa'i (2621); graded authentic by al-Albani.

Hajj on behalf of the deceased

Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: While I was sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a woman came to him and said, “I gave my mother a slave-girl in charity, and she has died.” He ﷺ said, “Your reward is assured, and the inheritance has returned her to you.” She said, “O Messenger of Allah, she owed a month's fast — shall I fast on her behalf?” He said, “Fast on her behalf.” She said, “She never performed Hajj — shall I perform Hajj on her behalf?” He said, “Perform Hajj on her behalf.”

Narrator: Buraydah ibn al-HusaybAuthentic — reported by MuslimReported by Muslim (1149).

Fulfilling Hajj on behalf of the deceased

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said: A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “My sister vowed to perform Hajj, and she has died.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “If she had owed a debt, would you have repaid it?” He said, “Yes.” He said, “Then fulfill what is owed to Allah, for Allah is the most deserving that His due be fulfilled.”

Narrator: Abdullah ibn AbbasAuthentic — reported by al-BukhariReported by al-Bukhari (6699).

Hajj on behalf of the frail elderly

Narrator: Abdullah ibn AbbasAgreed upon (Sahih)Reported by al-Bukhari (1513) and Muslim (1334).

Umrah, in the ruling on delegation, follows Hajj: whatever is established for Hajj on another's behalf is likewise established for Umrah.
